A Tribute to Stephen Humphrey

Historian Stephen Humphrey

Rotherhithe and Bermondsey History Society Talk

Speakers: Len Reilly and Steve Potter and others

Join us as we pay tribute to Stephen Humphrey, former President of the RBHS, esteemed local historian and a true gentleman. Stephen passed away last November, a remarkable man who is greatly missed by the local community for his knowledge of the area and his charisma.

Southwark local historian and columnist Stephen Humphrey wrote eight books on the history of Southwark borough and worked for more than 30 years at Southwark’s Local History Library in Angel Place, Borough, until retiring in 2010.

Today those who knew him will be devoting the evening to his life and work, with guests including former colleagues Len Reilly and Steve Potter.

About The Rotherhithe & Bermondsey Local History Society

The Rotherhithe & Bermondsey Local History Society’s aim is to encourage interest in the history of Rotherhithe, Bermondsey, the surrounding area, Docklands and the River Thames.

It was established in 1994 in the days of the London Docklands Development Corporation (L.D.D.C.). This quango, established in 1981 to regenerate the disused docks, sought to engage the local community by funding local history lectures.  Diana Rimel of Goldsmiths College organised these in the former Dock Offices on Surrey Quays Road and in 1994, when the L.D.D.C. withdrew, Time & Talents stepped in and re-packaged the talks as its local history group.
