Friday Lunch: Nick Costley-White Trio

Friday 29th March 2019| 1pm | Royal Festival Hall, Level 2, Central Bar| Free

Bring laid-back swing and acoustic jazz to your Friday lunch-time with an in-demand guitarist and his trio.

Nick Costley-White has performed with a roster of jazz maestros, from Martin Speake to Stan Sulzmann.

His debut album Detour Ahead was described by Jazzwise as ‘a masterclass in the under-appreciated art of playing beautiful, laid-back swing’.

His trio, featuring double bassist Ferg Ireland (Soweto Kinch, Kansas Smitty’s) and Lewis Wright on vibraphone (Empirical, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) unleash the early acoustic jazz of pianist Herbie Hancock alongside some lesser-known songbook gems.

Friday Tonic: Pi Ja Ma

Friday 29th March 2019| 6pm | Queen Elizabeth Hall | Free

The electro-pop artist brings nostalgic vocals and bewitching musical landscapes to Friday Tonic.

Influenced by bands from Jefferson Airplane, the Beach Boys and Françoise Hardy to modern contemporaries such as Broadcast and Stereolab, Pi Ja Ma’s songs are evolving fantasies and nostalgic daydreams, encouraging the listener to step back in time to the 1960s.

Her first EP, Radio Girl made an impression in France, the UK and on American college radio stations.

Her music is composed and produced by multi instrumentalist Axel Concato, and she is joined by Clémence Lasme on bass and Carol Teillard d’Eyry on drums.

Their debut album, Nice To Meet U, is a flurry of indie pop, alt rock and electro pop with a 60s spin.

Bold but breezy tracks tackle alienation and disappointing love stories, celebrity and the role of young women in society.

Philharmonia Chamber Players: Bruch & Muhly

Sunday 31st March 2019| 6pm | Royal Festival Hall| Free

Discover Bruch’s String Octet and Nico Muhly’s Clear Music, a virtuosic piece for cello, harp and celeste inspired by the music of John Taverner.

In a programme of two distinctive works, the Philharmonia Chamber Players first present Nico Muhly’s Clear Music, which grows out of a tiny isolated moment – Muhly describes it as an ‘exploration of a single measure’ – from John Taverner’s motet Mater Christi Sanctissima. Enjoy the shifting soundscapes, as the tender cello opening bursts into life with biting rhythms, underpinned by harp and celeste, showcasing their full range of expression. Over nine minutes, Clear Music builds in intensity from delicate chimes to powerful, soaring melodies.
