St George in Southwark 2017 Festival, a series of events for everyone in and around St George The Martyr.

St George the Martyr church in The Borough was the first to be dedicated to dedicated St George in London. The surrounding marshy area began to be known as St George’s Fields. The name can be found locally in St George’s Mansions, St George’s RC Cathedral and St George’s Circus. St George is honoured in  many countries, representatives of whom live in Southwark. He is a figure who can bring communities together.The Festival has been celebrated since 2007.

John Constable and Sarah Wheeler find a Dragon
St George in Southwark Festival is pleased to announce the return of our celebrated Dragon Quest. Join us as we sally forth in search of fire-breathing scary monsters and those magical creatures who bring health and healing. Hear their stories and help solve the clues to find signs of St George and The Dragon hidden in nooks and crannies in and around The Borough.

The Dragon Quest is devised and led by local writer-performer John Constable with Katy Nicholls, based on an original idea by Sarah Wheeler.

  • Monday 17th -11.15am
  • Friday 21st – 11.15am
  • Saturday 22nd – 11.15am

Meet in Tabard Street piazza SE1 1JA – between the Church of St George the Martyr and the gardens (near Borough tube). The Quest begins and ends here. Please arrive in good time. We depart promptly at 11.30am.

Adults: £3. Children free. All children must be accompanied by a adult who will responsible for their safety at all times during the quest. Maximum two children per adult.

The Dragon Café is a Mental Fight Club creative project: a relaxing café and imaginative space, open to all, located in the Crypt of St George the Martyr Church, Borough High St, SE1 1JA, opposite Borough tube station.

Ballad of St George & the Dragon

BALLAD OF ST GEORGE AND THE DRAGON

‘Ballad of St George and the Dragon’, a 500 year old ballad originally written about St Eglamore and adapted by the Lions Part to tell the story of George slaying the dragon. Two locations.

3.45pm Red Cross Garden & 4.30pm Borough Market Hall

7pm  Photo EXHIBITION LAUNCH & POETRY

Venue: St George the Martyr Church, Borough High Street, SE1 1JA (Crypt entrance at the back)

An exhibition of photographs by local schoolchildren on the theme of community. The exhibition will remain open daily until Sunday 23 April.

Venue: Starts at St George’s Cathedral to St George the Martyr

St George’s Day community procession. The dragon parades through Borough eaves St George’s Cathedral at 2pm to arrive at St George the Martyr Church in Borough High Street at 3pm.

3pm  ST GEORGE AND DRAGON(IA) PLAY / All Age Theatre

Venue: St George the Martyr (Tabard St Piazza)

All age theatre with this specially commissioned street play by Richard Brown for St George the Martyr and performed by local school choirs.

3.30pm  COMMUNITY TEA FOR ALL

Venue: Crossbones Graveyard, Redcross Way, London, SE1 1TA

155th consecutive Crossbones vigil, which has been observed on the 23 of every month since June 2004. Tonight’s vigil with John Constable and Friends of Crossbones is dedicated to St George as an inclusive patron saint, a healer, a protector of spiritual works and ‘Our Lady’s knight’.

Monday 24 April

6.30pm CELEBRATION OF THE SOLEMNITY OF ST GEORGE / Mass for St George’s Day

Venue: St George’s Cathedral, Westminster Bridge Rd, SE1 7HY2pm

Archbishop Peter Smith is the main celebrant of the St George’s Day Mass. St George’s Day is being transferred from yesterday Sunday, followed by reception.
