Vault Festival 2023: Side FX

Join Katie for a camp, chaotic show about the Pill. And Vampires.

About The Show

When it comes to contraception, things are better than they were – but that’s a low bar. Exploring all things hormonal, from the delightful to the unexpectedly dark, this is PhD research as you’ve never seen it before – drawing on interviews, autobiography, archival research, and a teenage Twilight obsession.

Seriously silly and based on real-life experiences, Side FX features musical comedy, poetry, games, and a dose of medical sexism. Be prepared for audience participation, bingo, lollipops and country singing.*

*Side Effects may include laughter, rage, and an aversion to ketchup.

KATIE PATERSON is a theatremaker pursuing a PhD at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Her practice is informed by a queer feminist concern with lived experience, comedy, and the audience relationship. Her theatre work has been shown at the Barbican, Pleasance, Camden People’s Theatre, Theatre Deli, Theatre503, Edinburgh Fringe, Maiden Speech and Waitress Festivals. Katie has given papers on her doctoral research at the UCL Institute of Advanced Studies, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and TaPRA. Katie’s research is supported by the Guildhall Arts and Health Studentship.
