Grosvenor Film Festival Weekend

Grosvernor Film Festival Weekend

17th / 18th September 2016 | The Biscuit Factory SE16

Film Festival weekend flyer

A quirky venue and London-themed line-up for the Grosvenor Film Festival bringing the cinema experience to Bermondsey.

Grosvenor has joined with The Nomad Cinema to host the festival in one of the former biscuit factory’s warehouses – an impressive yet eerie space for a viewing experience not to forget. With a long and proud tradition, there’s no doubt that Bermondsey’s communities know what it means to be a Londoner. That is why the festival has selected a special line-up of films which, like Bermondsey, are truly made in London.

Take a trip down memory lane with an afternoon of archive footage from Southwark Local History Library. Carefully curated by local resident and the founder of the Biscuit Factory museum, Gary Magold, the films span from 1931 to current day and include life on the docks, May Day marches, an antifascist march, working at Peek Frean’s and a lot more. The line-up lasts approximately two hours, but please feel free to come and go.  For more detail about this event, follow the link

My Beautiful Laundrette (15)

[textmarker color=”000000″]Saturday 17 September – 7.30pm[/textmarker]

My Beautiful Laundrette film at The Grosvenor Film Festival 2016

This classic Brit-film stars Gordon Warnecke as Omar, an ambitious Londoner who lives in a grotty flat south of the river with his formally successful, now alcoholic father. Fuelled by the big dreams promised by Thatcherism, Omar and his ex-skinhead lover Johnny (played brilliantly by Daniel Day-Lewis) strive for success, freedom and hope when they fix up Omar’s uncle’s rundown old laundromat. The story of two outsiders in modern London trying to make their mark is a must see for any Big Smoke resident.

Paddington (PG)

[textmarker color=”000000″]Sunday 18 September – 3.30pm[/textmarker]

Paddington film at The Grosvenor Film Festival 2016

Hailing from the deepest, darkest Peruvian forests, Paddington arrives in London looking for a new start, a new family, and maybe some of his favourite food… marmalade. Filled with an excellent cast – watch out for a charming Sally Hawkins, pathetic Peter Capaldi and villanous Nicole Kidman – and heartwarming laughs, Paddington takes you on a whistle-stop tour of London that will warm even the very coldest of hearts.

Alfie (15)

[textmarker color=”000000″]Sunday 18 September – 6.30pm[/textmarker]

Alfie film at The Grosvenor Film Festival 2016

“My understanding of women only goes as far as the pleasure. When is comes to the pain I’m like any other bloke – I don’t want to know”.

Meet Alfie – cool, charming, and a hit with the ladies. That should be enough to most, but Alfie’s got bigger questions – “what’s it all about?”, he wants
to know. This is the film that made Michael Caine a star, and with this iconic performance, it’s not hard to see why.

The Nomad Cinema

The Nomad Cinema is the roaming pop-up that gives back: since 2010, The Nomad has earned the reputation as ‘London’s best outdoor cinema’ [Evening Standard], popping up at an inspiring range of beautiful, unique and intriguing screening locations across London and beyond.

The Nomad is about community and their film events embrace and enhance each venue, offering new ways of experiencing an uplifting range of films, from classics, cult and indie to mainstream guilty pleasures. With its low impact set up, The Nomad wanders into town, unpacks cinema magic, then disappears into the night, leaving no trace.

In short, The Nomad is the pop-up cinema with a difference: a very special festival atmosphere, and that little bit of Nomad magic make our events memorable and unique. More than just providing screenings of great films in appropriately great locations, Nomad events immerse you in the flavour of the film, with quality catering, goodie bags, and a warm friendly welcome…

The Nomad gives 100% of their profits to The Sustainability Institute charity in South Africa.

As the UK’s first Social Enterprise Pop-Up Cinema that donates 100% of its profits to charity, they have a fantastic Volunteer Programme to enable them to donate as much as possible each year. Click HERE for more information and to apply.
