Purple Tuesday 2019 at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre

Surrey Quays Shopping Centre is taking part in Purple Tuesday on the 12th of November by hosting a series of free workshops to help increase understanding and awareness of the difficulties faced by someone living with day to day challenges.

Purple Tuesday 2019, is an international call to action, focused on changing the customer experience for disabled people.

The free event will see, Surrey Quays, commit to decisive, practical actions to meet the needs of disabled visitors, and share knowledge and best practice with retailers, customers and local businesses.

The event will take place in the Time & Talent Unit (opposite Tesco) from 10am – 4pm where specialists will host a variety of workshops to educate visitors on how to support people living with different conditions including deafness and autism. And everyone is welcome!

Other workshops and talks will focus on dementia, with the centre featuring an interactive ‘Virtual Dementia Experience’ which puts participants in the shoes of someone living with the condition. Alzheimer’s UK will also be hosting Dementia Friends Training sessions.

What’s happening and when?

  • 10.30am: Stroke Workshop – Recognising signs of stroke and what to do.
  • 12.00pm: Autism Workshop – Understanding what’s it like to have autism, ADHD or other forms of sensory overload.
  • 12.30pm: Communication Access – Inclusive Communication for all
  • 13.00pm: Hearing and Memory Loss – Learn how to speak more effectively with an older person with memory or hearing loss in the workshop.
  • 14.00pm: Southwark Dementia Action Alliance speaking on Dementia
  • 14.30pm: Falls Prevention Service – Understanding how to help someone who has fallen.

Virtual Dementia Experience – Take part in an interactive, immersive sensory 1:1 Virtual Dementia experience to understand what it is like to live with Dementia.

There will also be information and advice from other organisations including Jobcentre Plus Disability adviser.
