The Conductor is a stage play with Symphonic piano based on the novel by Sarah Quigley. featuring Joe Skelton, Deborah Wastell and Danny Wallington (piano). The book adapted by Mark Wallington and the play directed by Jared McNeill.

The writing of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 7th Symphony under the Siege of Leningrad. The threat of fascism creeps ever closer.

What use is art in the face of all this?

Share this poignant, deeply resonant piece with us, in the midst of the cold season, 75 years after the Siege of Leningrad, a winter that devastated a nation.

The crackle of a tannoy breaks a pregnant silence…and for one moment, as the barrage of shell and artillery pauses, music washes over the city of Leningrad.

Shostakovich In Rotherhithe: From Jewish Folk Poetry Op. 79

Composed in 1948 fully aware of the Holocaust and in response to a new and brutal wave of anti-Semitism sweeping the Soviet Union, the poems describe the hard life for Jews under the Czar, allowing Shostakovich to speak about their current plight using coded allegory. The music brings to life the misery, terror and humour contained within the Jewish tradition, and makes listening to these songs a deeply moving experience. This concert will be presented on the Stage.
