Volunteering – Brunel Museum Community Cafe Assistant needed

Brunel Museum

Community Cafe Assistant needed

The Brunel Museum in Rotherhithe is an International Landmark Site, home of the oldest Underground in the World and has a growing reputation for exciting and unusual events in its Engine House, rooftop garden and huge underground amphitheatre. We are a small museum open seven days a week and reliant on volunteers to tell a big story.

We need engaging volunteers who can welcome visitors to the museum during the day, give a short introduction to the museum, field enquiries in person or over the phone, process admissions, sell merchandise and serve refreshments in the small cafe. You will have the opportunity to help with our innovative day and/or evening events and generally ensure the well being of our visitors. You would also establish a good working knowledge of Brunel’s incredible achievements and the museum’s collections. We would also be interested in people who have the skills or aptitude to build on our fantastic social media work on Twitter and Facebook. In return you will be part of a friendly team of volunteers who have the opportunity to learn how to manage the day to day running of the museum, basic retail and catering, PR and event management.

You will be reliable, trustworthy and able to commit to a minimum of a half day a week, weekdays or weekend, either 10.00am – 1.30pm or 1.30pm-5.00pm. We also have evening volunteer opportunities on certain concert nights from 6pm-9.30pm with free tickets available to those volunteers to hear some of London’s most exciting musicians playing at the museum.

Grade II* listed structure and the world’s first caisson. The chamber is half the size of Shakespeare’s Globe, and is open again for the first time in a hundred and fifty years. This is where work on the tunnel began, and where Isambard Kingdom Brunel nearly drowned. When it opened in 1843 it was the world’s most popular visitor attraction, with a million visitors in the first three months. There are guided tours every lunchtime, and regular music and theatre events, but entry is by half size doorway and temporary staircase. Work has begun to convert the chamber into gallery and performance space and the centrepiece of the Museum.

You come by boat to the museum at 10.45 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays or by walking tours on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. See guided walking tour from Bermondsey or Embankment tube stations.
